Peter Sutherland was born in 1976 in Ann Arbor, Michigan and now lives and works in Chinatown in New York City. His work employes the techniques classical to traditional, documentary photography to capture the hidden beauty in everyday objects, occasions and surroundings. As well as being known for his photography, the artist also works with the mediums of paint, installation and film.

Sutherland has published several monographs to critical acclaim and exhibited works in galleries such as ATM and Mountain Fold in New York, Target in Tokyo, Someday in Melbourne and V1 in Copenhagen. In 2014 he presented his work at solo shows at the Redhook in Brooklyn, at the Bill Brady KC in Kansas and at the Half Gallery in New York. His presence at group exhibitions in 2014 includes Slip at Michell-Iness and Nash and Strikes at Nahmad Contemporary in New York.

Sutherland’s work has a powerful visual appeal, often switching between mediums and interchanging and interplaying sources and materials. Progressing from his emblematic use of photograph, the artist has progressed to amalgamate photograph, paint and installation, playing with dimension, texture and layering. His large-scale canvases question the concept of artistic presentation: realistic in size and depiction, they also offer an element of the surreal and fantastical. Often featuring natural landscapes and sweeping panoramas, they encourage the contemplation of the relationship between reality and creative representation. By overlaying his images, he creates an anecdotal narrative in his works that reveals artistic possibilities and interpretations and reflects the qualities of both individual and collective memories.
