Leo Gabin is title chosen to represent the collective artist group comprised of Lieven Deconinck, Gaëtan Begerem, and Robin De Vooght. Living and working in Belgium, the artists have worked together since the early 2000s. Their work covers a variety of media including painting, drawing and sculpture. The trio teach as a collective at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where they each completed their own degrees.
Their solo exhibitions include Inside the White Cube at the White Cube space in London (2014) and Leo Gabin at the Elizabeth Dee Gallery in New York (2013). Selected group exhibitions from this year include: Life, The Journal at Venus Over Manhattan, New York, Teen And Keen, selected by David Gryn, Artprojx Cinema and Rich Mix, London, and Mystic Fire, curated by Darren Flook, Paradise Row, London.
The group take inspiration from the inexhaustible information on the internet that overlaps public and private realms. Their technique makes use of the proliferation of cultural images and implicitly explores the boundaries between transience and permanence in contemporary culture. Taking images directly from social networking sites and celebrity blogs, the final works incorporate downloaded or printed images into new configurations. The artists’ experimentation with medium represents their creative flexibility as a whole. Pushing the boundaries between virtual and tangible art, they question the media and technology that surrounds us. Best known for their video montages and heavily abstract paintings, the group amalgamate their love of street art with an in-depth knowledge of consumer culture and creative process.
