Alexander May was born in Maryland, USA in 1983 and now lives in New York. He has completed a BFA in fiber material studies at the School of Art Institute of Chicago in 2006 and an MFA in sculpture at the Bard College in New York in 2012. His travelling experience and interest in textiles markets has given him a heightened familiarity with materials that has greatly affected his oeuvre.

His solo exhibition experience includes shows at Art Basel in Hong Kong, at Balice Hertling in Paris, R space in Vietmas, ASS in New York, TÄT Berlin and The Company, Los Angeles. Selected group exhibitions include Balice Hertling at the  Metropolitan Art Society in Lebanon, Galleria Nilufar and Giò Marconi Gallery in Paris, Synthesia and M+B in Los Angeles, Room East in New York and HBC in Berlin. In 2014 he participated in a curated exhibition at the Film Centre in New York entitled Warm Bath with Balice Hertling.

Passionate about design and the potential it offers when applied to art, May pairs his minimalist aesthetic with an acute spatial awareness and innovation. He is particularly interested in objects that question and explore the purity of original state and form. His works are typically monochromatic, very often solely using black and white in a very selective choice of colour palette. His exploration of the projection of text onto a canvas amalgamates the concepts of language and visual communication in art, encouraging the viewer to question perception and presentation.
